This short, 6500 word handbook is designed to give people wanting to go to China to teach English an idea of what to expect. It covers the differences--the pros and cons--of going to work for a public school versus a training school in China. It will help you decide which one appeals to you more and outlines the visa requirements and qualifications you'll need to work there. Additionally, the book shares with you how Chinese schools and students typically treat their new foreign teachers. It details the obstacles that public and training school teachers face and offers suggestions on what you can do for your first lesson.

A Quick Guide to Teaching English in China eBook Clark Nielsen

As someone who has been to China and plans to teach in China someday soon, I have done a ton of research and talked with a lot of English teachers in China. Let me tell you, the information that is provided in this short booklet may save you hundreds of dollars and hours of frustration! I think a lot of people will stumble onto this little guide expecting lesson plans and a full blown out strategy for teaching. Do not make the mistake of looking at it this way or underestimating the value of the information contained in this little, and yes, very short guide. The information on visas and the different types of schools alone is priceless. This little booklet may single handedly prevent you from going into a school type that does not fit your personality and it may help you make the decision that results in your China teaching experience being an incredibly rewarding one and not one that ends in you scrambling for a return ticket to your home country after a few weeks. There are no lesson plans or step by step instructions for being a good teacher. However, you will learn some invaluable tips for managing your classes and will receive a very realistic heads up on what you can expect in the classroom. Bottom line, if you plan to teach in China, do not hesitate to make this purchase! It is short, but very sweet.

As the author of Teaching English in China - How to Negotiate the Best Package, Salary, and Avoid Getting Screwed, don't overlook the important information provided in Clark Nielsen's guide as it seems to complement the information I have written about. This book goes into details on how to manage your class, your students, and what you can expect working in the different available schools and environments in China.

The sections on how to deal with recruiters is especially important. A highly recommended read.
Maybe its the download but there are only a few pages to this book. Maybe worth the .99 cent. If you are expecting the full book then you will be disappointed.
It is good to hear a perspective of someone that has experienced the culture firsthand. It can be challenging because our basic methods of teaching in our cultures are so different.
A very short book with precious little information except the need to get the correct visa, that there's a difference between teaching in public schools and english institutes and do not trust everything a recruiter says but rather to question everything they say. Great, "Things I could have learned from Google" may have been a better title to this book. The author should maybe put time into writing a longer book that details more of his experiences and includes stories of how things can go wrong ect. from his friends, whom he mentions briefly in the book, and his long experience living in China.
This ebook is a great introduction to teaching in China. I have taught oversees twice now, and having the information in this book would have saved me a lot of trouble. The book will teach you how to ensure that you don't end up getting sent home early. It shows you how to deal with recruiters who often overlook important details so they can make money off of you. It will also give you a very realistic view of what you can expect from teaching at different schools. It is short, but it is a valuable resource for ESL teachers.
